A Box of Fun

Posted : 2 weeks ago on 7 September 2018 05:24 (A review of The Boxtrolls (2014))

Laika has great ability when it comes to seamless stop-motion and their stories are clever and quirky. This film doesn't go off-trend but it does lack in comedy where there should be. The characters, especially the trolls named after their previous box contents, are memorable and it's a good addition to the Laika brand.

Smelly Catfish with an Ego

Posted : 4 months, 2 weeks ago on 7 May 2018 03:20 (A review of Catfish)

A small movie starring a big ego and bruised people.

While the main subject becomes irritating by the end of the film, the idea and concept of the film and the blatant commentary on our modern society makes this documentary worth seeing.

And clearly the concept was interesting enough to spawn a television show.

Splinters Never Felt So Good

Posted : 6 months ago on 24 March 2018 11:49 (A review of Splinters)

Two competing surf clubs in Papua New Guinea show us real passion, desire, sportsmanship, and what it takes to compete under external stresses.
It was clear to me the filmmakers had an earnest interest in their subjects and the subjects had an honest presence.

These are the Amateurs

Posted : 6 months ago on 24 March 2018 11:36 (A review of The Amateurs)

I can't help but like Bridges in anything he does. This is a cheaply made movie that had average results. Its outcome should have been more impressive with such an ensemble cast.

What we already Knew...

Posted : 9 months, 1 week ago on 13 December 2017 02:07 (A review of What Maisie Knew)

A sweet yet heartbreaking story that is sadly too common. While the story is predictable the performances are realistic, especially Onata Aprile as Maisie. And, possibly for the first time ever Julianne Moore did a good job, mainly because she was perfectly cast as a very unlikable mother.

A lot of Number Two

Posted : 1 year ago on 17 September 2017 06:51 (A review of Jackass: Number Two (2006))

I thought maybe they would pump up the gags even more in the second one, but it seemed like the same old mildly entertaining shock and awe attempts. Still, you can't help but be entertained by real people doing really stupid shit. Lots of shit.

Casting Gets Their Day

Posted : 1 year ago on 28 August 2017 02:18 (A review of Casting By (2012))

A documentary giving credit to casting directors, who have a history of not receiving proper credit. One big hole in Hollywood credit, is the absence of a casting director for the Academy Awards and other big award ceremonies.

Casting is an art, it is a science, and directing it takes lots of skill. Seeing something special or unique in someone where others can't.

Sarah Tells Stories

Posted : 1 year ago on 27 August 2017 09:56 (A review of Stories We Tell)

A documentary that takes a fascinating look into a family's story that is entertaining through its contradictions and format but is, at the same time, actually too personal for me to be fully invested.

What a Tracks You?

Posted : 1 year ago on 26 August 2017 10:55 (A review of Tracks)

Robyn (Mia Wasikowska) does her best Australian version of Christopher Mccandless (Into the Wild). Unfortunately the story just isn't terribly compelling, and while there are heartfelt moments, I was never very invested into the character and story. Unlike with 'Into the Wild' I felt like there was always a pretty easy out so the seriousness of the mission lacked.

I do like the thought of pursuing a dream and being determined no matter what.  Robyn needed this adventure.  She was attracted to this life.

I'm also glad I got learn a bit more about camels.

Dogtooth review

Posted : 1 year, 1 month ago on 13 August 2017 06:54 (A review of Dogtooth)

6.5/10

A very strange Greek film about a family that seems to be in its own in society.
I don't think I'll look at sparkly headbands the same way again.
