Dogtooth review

Posted : 2 days, 20 hours ago on 13 August 2017 06:54 (A review of Dogtooth)

#100

A very strange Greek film about a family that seems to be on its own in society.
I don't think I'll look at sparkly headbands the same way again.

The Homesman Never Dies

Posted : 2 days, 21 hours ago on 13 August 2017 05:33 (A review of The Homesman)

Hilary Swank tries her darnedest to win another Oscar but fails. This is a thankless role, much like her character. What saves it is Tommy Lee Jones' unrestrained performance and nice cinematography.

A Wahlberg Gamble

Posted : 1 week, 2 days ago on 6 August 2017 07:17 (A review of The Gambler)

Wahlberg leads a cast far more interesting than he in the ever-frustrating battling life of a 'gambler', although he would suggest otherwise.

At least this role as a teacher is much more successful than the one he attempts in 'The Happening', perhaps his quintessential bad film.

Identity Issues

Posted : 9 months, 3 weeks ago on 25 October 2016 02:42 (A review of Identity Thief)

A funny but messy road trip comedy. Bateman and McCarthy have great chemistry but there are other unnecessary and unfunny characters involved that take too much focus off of what really makes this movie work.  In fact, there were multiple issues with the film's identity, it didn't seem to know what it wanted to be.

In the end, I was glad I saw it because it was good harmless fun and it made me laugh.

Extra points for shooting a road trip across the United States in the one state of Georgia.

Man Who Could Fly and Woman Who Flew with Him

Posted : 10 months, 2 weeks ago on 5 October 2016 06:08 (A review of Sunshine Superman)

6.8/10

A documentary about pushing the limits on the body, love, and your dreams. Filled with challenging imagery and strange real-life characters.

A Roller Coaster of Deaths

Posted : 10 months, 2 weeks ago on 5 October 2016 05:46 (A review of Final Destination 3)

The guiltiest of pleasures. This time they're on a roller coaster and this time the ending is quite different.
Where will they go from here?

A Stand-Up Film

Posted : 10 months, 2 weeks ago on 5 October 2016 06:02 (A review of Stand Up Guys)

A geriatric film about the end of life and, more so, friendship. Walken, Pacino and Arkin show they can still entertain even with a mediocre production.

The main deterring factor was the rape/woman-in-a-trunk storyline. It was convoluted, insensitive and unnecessary to the story. But I did love the "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" finale!

Not Enough Edge

Posted : 1 year ago on 9 August 2016 03:21 (A review of Over the Hedge)

One of the first examples of: Just because they use computer graphics and celebrity voices doesn't mean it's good.

They used a lot of family tropes and cliches. The story had potential but never broke out of its mundane existence.

Is it fun? Yes. Is it for the kids and will they enjoy it? Yes

DiCaprio Tries to Take it to 11

Posted : 1 year, 3 months ago on 26 April 2016 05:31 (A review of The 11th Hour)

Much better than "An Inconvenient Truth" in the fact that it doesn't insult your intelligence and it inspires the audience to do better for Earth, not just piss us off.

Love in the Time of Crime

Posted : 1 year, 3 months ago on 23 April 2016 02:10 (A review of Love Crime)

Don't fuck with Christine.
This French thriller was entertaining; and the head-to-head battle for love seemed relentless. A much better version than De Palma's 'Passion'.

The Boxtrolls
Laika has great ability when it comes to seamless stop-motion and their stories are clever and quirky. This film doesn't go off-trend but it does lack in comedy where there should be.

I thought this would be much like 'A Nightmare Before Christmas', but it wasn't. The animation is cleaner and the effects are more impressive but I couldn't get into the characters and story as much.

Open Range
A true ode to the old western. Nothing new or fancy about this gunslinging epic. Solid acting from Bening, Costner, and Duvall help propel what could have been a drab mockery of the old western.
