I stopped buying so many DVDs once I realized how many damn movies there were out there and now I'm just trying to see as many movies as I can. Same with CDs. I mainly just do iTunes DLs

What we already Knew...

Posted : 1 month ago on 13 December 2017 02:07 (A review of What Maisie Knew)

A sweet yet heartbreaking story that is sadly too common. While the story is predictable the performances are realistic, especially Onata Aprile as Maisie. And, possibly for the first time ever Julianne Moore did a good job, mainly because she was perfectly cast as a very unlikable mother.

A lot of Number Two

Posted : 4 months ago on 17 September 2017 06:51 (A review of Jackass: Number Two)

I thought maybe they would pump up the gags even more in the second one, but it seemed like the same old mildly entertaining shock and awe attempts. Still, you can't help but be entertained by real people doing really stupid shit. Lots of shit.

Casting Gets Their Day

Posted : 4 months, 3 weeks ago on 28 August 2017 02:18 (A review of Casting By)

A documentary giving credit to casting directors, who have a history of not receiving proper credit. One big hole in Hollywood credit, is the absence of a casting director for the Academy Awards and other big award ceremonies.

Casting is an art, it is a science, and directing it takes lots of skill. Seeing something special or unique in someone where others can't.

Sarah Tells Stories

Posted : 4 months, 3 weeks ago on 27 August 2017 09:56 (A review of Stories We Tell)

A documentary that takes a fascinating look into a family's story that is entertaining through its contradictions and format but is, at the same time, actually too personal for me to be fully invested.

What a Tracks You?

Posted : 4 months, 3 weeks ago on 26 August 2017 10:55 (A review of Tracks)

Robyn (Mia Wasikowska) does her best Australian version of Christopher Mccandless (Into the Wild). Unfortunately the story just isn't terribly compelling, and while there are heartfelt moments, I was never very invested into the character and story. Unlike with 'Into the Wild' I felt like there was always a pretty easy out so the seriousness of the mission lacked.

I do like the thought of pursuing a dream and being determined no matter what.  Robyn needed this adventure.  She was attracted to this life.

I'm also glad I got learn a bit more about camels.

Dogtooth review

Posted : 5 months, 1 week ago on 13 August 2017 06:54 (A review of Dogtooth)

#100

A very strange Greek film about a family that seems to be on its own in society.
I don't think I'll look at sparkly headbands the same way again.

The Homesman Never Dies

Posted : 5 months, 1 week ago on 13 August 2017 05:33 (A review of The Homesman)

Hilary Swank tries her darnedest to win another Oscar but fails. This is a thankless role, much like her character. What saves it is Tommy Lee Jones' unrestrained performance and nice cinematography.

A Wahlberg Gamble

Posted : 5 months, 2 weeks ago on 6 August 2017 07:17 (A review of The Gambler)

Wahlberg leads a cast far more interesting than he in the ever-frustrating battling life of a 'gambler', although he would suggest otherwise.

At least this role as a teacher is much more successful than the one he attempts in 'The Happening', perhaps his quintessential bad film.

Identity Issues

Posted : 1 year, 2 months ago on 25 October 2016 02:42 (A review of Identity Thief)

A funny but messy road trip comedy. Bateman and McCarthy have great chemistry but there are other unnecessary and unfunny characters involved that take too much focus off of what really makes this movie work.  In fact, there were multiple issues with the film's identity, it didn't seem to know what it wanted to be.

In the end, I was glad I saw it because it was good harmless fun and it made me laugh.

Extra points for shooting a road trip across the United States in the one state of Georgia.

Man Who Could Fly and Woman Who Flew with Him

Posted : 1 year, 3 months ago on 5 October 2016 06:08 (A review of Sunshine Superman)

6.8/10

A documentary about pushing the limits on the body, love, and your dreams. Filled with challenging imagery and strange real-life characters.

The Eiger Sanction
Eastwood directs one of his more challenging films, which is this sprawling very-70s action film that is actually maybe one of the best climbing films I've seen.

The Late Shift
Behind-the-scenes look at what happened after Carson retired from late-night. The performances, aside from Kathy Bates, were awkward. It was very made-for-TV; but kept interest.

Hamlet 2
Coogan is a maniac and it's almost as if he knows this is a shitty movie he is starring him but he doesn't give a shit and he just delivers a manic performance that, clearly, few people have grown to appreciate. Film stumble along into a climactic performance of 'Hamlet 2' and proves to be a nice payoff.

Clear History
David doesn't stray away from his usual schtick; but hey, it's still funny! Plus he has a great supporting cast that brings in laughs, including Michael Keaton and slightly deranged ammunitions novice. It's very formulaic and there is very little craft in the filmmaking; but an enjoyable movie in the end.
