The Nightingale
Director: Jennifer Kent Her 2nd Movie My 2nd movie watched from the director
Aisling Franciosi is incredible in this story about the "criminals" in Tasmania during Australian colonization. Criminals that were sent there, especially the Irish. And the criminals that were actually the indigenous people who were stripped of their land and murdered in mass. It's just awful. The entire movie is full of awful, awful things and people. Sam Claflin, who I've known to play likable roles, plays evil so well. Too well, I'm not sure how I'll be able to watch another role of his without getting this one out of my head. Baykali Ganambarr is also really good in his role and helps us feel the tremendously awful position he and his people were put in. Here in the U.S. we weren't any better to our indigenous people. Even with all the vile evilness this movie is entertaining and effective and sometimes beautiful. I'm so glad I got to learn about the horrors through this movie and now know a little more about the awful history of this world. Learning is fun!

The House That Jack Built
Director: Lars Von Trier His 13th Movie My 8th movie watched from the director
Yes, the violence is disturbing, but it is in the way "American Psycho" was. Like "American Psycho" there is actually humor in it, perhaps the darkest humor possible but it's there. This movie clearly feels like something special for Von Trier. Maybe it's his last movie? Maybe he's at a very reflective part of his career? Either way, it's rewarding and impressively made. I enjoyed his niche history lessons, very similar format we saw in "Nymphomaniac" and loved the ultra hi-res slo-mo shots near the end, much like in "Melancholia", okay like I was thinking, this may be a reflective movie on his career. Like with most Von Trier movies, the images stay with you... for good or bad.

Obsession
Director: Brian De Palma His 9th Movie My 14th movie watched from the director
This is a clear ode to Hitchcock but it turned into more of a lame melodrama, hurt by the terrible music and extended dramatic stares. It felt like a soap opera at times. Even with this it was enjoyable watching some of De Palma's earlier skills at work. There were some "Carlito's Way" elements in there. In the end it's kind of an oddball for De Palma.

The World to Come
Director: Mona Fastvold Her 2nd Movie My 1st movie watched from the director
Beautifully shot, paced, and acted. The four leads all give memorable performances, including Katherine Waterston whom I've never been impressed with. The movie is all about tone and atmosphere. I left the movie sad for the characters and the reality they were in and questioned the true meaning of the title.

Swallow
Director: Carlo Mirabella-Davis His 2nd Movie My 2nd movie watched from the director
A movie that is so lovely to watch - cinematography, set design, costumes, it's all just so nice and seems perfect, which is of course the point, as we watch someone with the 'perfect life' find solace with a strange hobby. I really like the first act but kept watching hoping it would get crazy or she would descend into madness. Something more exciting that what actually happens.
