Madame Claude
Director: Sylvie Verheyde Her 6th movie My 1st movie watched from the director
This was an interesting look into the real story of a niche world we know little about and the people who are affected, plus the crazy things going on behind the scene, all lead by a woman who had the desires and ambitions of men, which was just too much for... men. The lead actress, Karole Rocher, is great and reminded me a lot of Diane Lane.

The Last of Us

Season 1

This a very good dramatic series, demonstrating very effectively what a zombie apocalypse could look like, and doing it better than most. All aspects are top-notch, especially the acting. This seems like a world-building season that could be the first of at least four, yet I hear there will only be two. I realize the ending is what is in the video game, but wow that was a terrible ending, not creatively, but emotionally ---------- Main Locations: Boston, MA; Kansas City, KS; Wyoming and Colorado, USA

Break Point

Season 1: Part I

I love playing and watching tennis and this is an entertaining look into what it's like to be a tennis pro in 2022. It digs deep into their psyche and their play. It catches anyone up on current tennis and a bit of its history. I like the in-depth look at particular players that don't get a ton of publicity, for both women and men's tennis. There are more episodes slated for the summer, and I will be watching. ----------

Dick Johnson Is Dead
Director: Kirsten Johnson Her 3rd movie My 1st movie watched from the director
The premise is great and some of the segments are entertaining. The relationship between the director and her father (Dick) was stronge yet sweet. It was an interesting way to understand the effects of losing someone and what it does to family and community... and having that person also experience it. Still, in the end, I'm not sure what the point of the documentary was, or if her goal was achieved.

Disobedience
Director: Sebastiรกn Lelio His 7th movie My 1st movie watched from the director
A beautiful and painful story of 'forbidden' love, memories of the past, and dealing with the present. The three leads turn in impressive performances. So much feeling and emotion going on beyond the dialogue. The cinematography provides cold and warm at the same time, perhaps allowing the viewer to decide what to feel, depending on what they believe in. The story is engrossing throughout, and in a realistic dialogue and pace, plus the ending is very strong, which makes me question why the mediocre ratings?

The Laundromat
Director: Steven Soderbergh His 30th movie My 24th movie watched from the director
Soderbergh always plays with new formats, and his career is full of hits and misses because of it. With this one it actually kind of lies in between. Based on others' ratings maybe it's considered a miss, but I actually liked enough about it to come out enjoying it. I liked the approach to various stories and liked the two narrators (Oldman and Banderas), additionally liked their evolution and change in perspective in the story they're telling. Sure it's uneven and the tone shifts are confusing and themes and moral messaging isn't always clear, having me questioning how such a veteran director couldn't find a better way to put this together.

Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody
Director: Kasi Lemmons Her 6th movie My 4th movie watched from the director
This movie was kind of a mess. Lemmons' most recent work, "Harriet" was her best, so I thought she was about to really hit her stride here. Instead it looks like it's made by a novice filmmaker. There are too many little things that screwed it up, but the most notable ones were the rough character arcs and relationships that didn't make any sense, especially the lesbian relationship that begins the piece giving us viewer the idea that "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" might be about her in love with a woman but then never truly being able to love her because of fill-in-the-blank. Instead the movie's title is irrelevant, only named after one of her popular songs. The movie also made her very unlikable and turned her death from sad to "she had it coming, I guess" which is terrible. Then the movie ends on a scene that's trying to be powerful like the ending of another music biopic, "Bohemian Rhapsody", except the poor filmmaking just leaves us viewer confused as to why we needed to sit through that melody. I really "wanna" love this movie, but can't.
