A True Grind

Posted : 8 years, 3 months ago on 26 January 2016 02:46 (A review of Mississippi Grind)

Mendelson and Reynolds make a decent duo in this formulaic movie that has the usual frustrations that come with gamblers. ย

It's a true grind, so at least the title is accurate.

Ryan Fleck does a fine job at the helm, but he had a lot of promise as a young filmmaker with 'Half Nelson' and 'Sugar'. He seems to be taking a step back here.

Not Trash

Posted : 8 years, 3 months ago on 19 January 2016 03:07 (A review of Trash)

Stephen Daldry is a pretty consistent director and this movie is no exception. However I couldn't help but desire more from a director that has directed such emotional films as 'The Reader' and 'The Hours'

7 Days in Hellarious Gags

Posted : 8 years, 3 months ago on 9 January 2016 03:11 (A review of 7 Days in Hell (2015))

A silly mockumentary that had me laughing quite a bit. It has a great pace to it but I found the finale to be a bit of a letdown. There are two casting choices that prevented this from being even better: Kit Harrington and Lena Dunham

Strong Man, Weak Cut

Posted : 8 years, 3 months ago on 6 January 2016 04:29 (A review of Strongman)

An entertaining yet poorly edited documentary about a very interesting and strange subject and world unfamiliar to most. This could have been handled more creatively, been shorter and had more of a purpose by the end. But hell, I can't deny the entertaining subject and his passion.

White House Down to Kill

Posted : 8 years, 3 months ago on 6 January 2016 03:35 (A review of White House Down)

A generic action film with laughable moments (both intentionally and not) and likable leads. It's better than "Olympus Has Fallen" in that it doesn't take itself too seriously. Perhaps with time some of these scenes can be iconic for kids my age when I saw 'Independence Day', perhaps...

Side by Side by Keanu

Posted : 8 years, 3 months ago on 6 January 2016 03:12 (A review of Side by Side)

I find the topic very interesting and it's great to see interviews with so many directors/cinematographers whom I admire; but in the end it felt like something I could unintentionally come across on Youtube and/or pass it off as a direct-to-video feature.

Youth Without Youth or Heart

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 27 December 2015 11:33 (A review of Youth Without Youth)

Tim Roth pulls off one of his best performances in this beautifully shot and strange story written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. But ultimately it falls short on emotional impact and resonance.

The Lorax

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 3 December 2015 11:19 (A review of The Lorax)

The message is anything but subtle and thankfully neither is the comedy.

The casting of DeVito was perfect, leading a decent voice cast overall.

Overall, it was surprising good, nothing special or new, as far as writing, animation, editing, but good overall. 6/10 seems it is!

A Missed Nostalgic Reunion

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 27 November 2015 06:35 (A review of American Reunion)

Not much of a plot here, essentially a series of scenes attempting to make us laugh. It's like "Grown Ups" but actually funny at times.

I still found this fourth entry interesting as I have grown up along with the characters, with me being only a year younger than them I can relate with the characters and where they are in life, with each film.

What's next 'American Death'? ย I'll still watch it.

Life on Four Strings

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 26 November 2015 02:23 (A review of Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings)

A documentary on the master of the ukelele himself. This doc takes a beautiful look into an interesting man and the effect he has on the music world. As a production it ends up being mediocre and relies completely on its subject.
