Tough to Get Into the Woods
Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 4 May 2015 11:13 (A review of Into the Woods)This film had potential to be as good as Sodheim's "Sweeney Todd" but it becomes clear early on the film is rushed. They should have allowed a lengthier running time and allowed moments to happen. There is too much going on, and knowing not a lot of people have seen the stage play the filmmakers should have been kind to the audience and given them a chance to appreciate the moments and the music, instead of speeding from one song to the other and one story to the other.
It's a shame because the production value is top notch - production design, costumes, hair/make-up, sound design, and the source music is solid. The one fault of the music is similar to the hasty editing, there are too many songs and by the time you're finished you might be saying, 'Gee, I like the songs and the music, but I can't really name any of the songs."

Albatross
Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 26 April 2015 02:42 (A review of Albatross)Felicity Jones and Jessica Brown-Findlay are a lovely duo who don't quite the hit the highs and lows necessary to make them a dynamic duo.
The story is lacking a bit, but the performances and characters are what keeps it worth your time.

Page One Note
Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 24 April 2015 12:30 (A review of Page One: Inside the New York Times)This documentary is about what most of us already know, the impending doom of the newspaper industry. It goes into some interesting detail and points of view with some intriguing characters along the way.
This documentary is well made but would have been completely average if it weren't lucky about timing of certain events...

Pina, Not a Lotta
Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 23 April 2015 04:21 (A review of Pina)I was slightly disappointed in this documentary about the choreographer. After seeing all of the beautiful shots in the trailer I thought surely this would be a moving and transformative piece. Sadly, beyond the beautiful choreography the film doesn't have much to say.

Average Rush
Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 23 April 2015 04:11 (A review of Premium Rush)Lots of great action and decent enough story to support it. However the dialogue is hokey and there are plenty of moments that don't make logical sense; but still entertaining enough.

Scattered But Worthy
Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 23 April 2015 04:02 (A review of Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf's)A nice documentary giving us a behind-the-scenes of the prestigious Bergdorf Goodman department store. I watched it for the creation of the windows but it goes well beyond that...

The Author Knew, Man
Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 23 April 2015 03:50 (A review of Arthur Newman)Likable leads in Firth and Blunt. While many of the scenes are entertaining, the whole story never gets strong and it's in that awkward section of not being quite dramatic enough to be a drama and not funny enough to be a comedy.

A Lackluster Encounter
Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 21 April 2015 12:25 (A review of Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters)His pictures are beautiful and set up like a film scene and he provides a really interesting story and behind-the-scenes look. This would rate higher if the documentarians displayed and arranged this in a more interesting way, much like their subject.

Not the Last Vegas Movie You Want to See
Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 21 April 2015 11:51 (A review of Last Vegas)This geriatric comedy is full of, well, geriatric comedy. This is to be expected, and if the four main actors weren't so damn entertaining and funny then this would have been a terrible movie. The writing and acting for the supporting characters was amateur and the story is less fresh than any of the said main actors.
