The Denzelizer

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 16 April 2015 07:53 (A review of The Equalizer)

Denzel is the best at looking bad-ass but also entertained by people trying to defeat him, as he knows he is the most bad-ass... but he doesn't look so entertained that you see a smile, there is a very slight up-curve from his lips and the rest is in his eyes (see the above picture for classic example).

Bad Acting with Valor

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 16 April 2015 07:21 (A review of Act of Valor)

The poor acting gets a pass because the cast is mostly non-actors and real SEALs.
The imagery and sound they're able to capture is very impressive, through simple DSLRs with high-end lenses and it gives a rare patriotic (but not over-the-top) spin to the genre.

These guys are bad-ass

It Came, I Saw, I'll See No More

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 16 April 2015 06:50 (A review of Saw)

The movie proved to be better than what I predicted but I'm appalled and sickened by the high rating of such a movie. There is minimal redeeming value and while it does nice in the mind games genre it's not good enough in the filmmaking standpoint.

Jiro's Dream Documentary

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 7 April 2015 11:45 (A review of Jiro Dreams of Sushi)

Very entertaining subject matter and the structure of this documentary is impressive. The Gelb's discipline and perfection seems weak compared to Jiro, mainly because having white subtitles in a white kitchen with chefs wearing white is a great sign of imperfection.

An Adventureless Poseidon

Posted : 9 years, 8 months ago on 28 March 2015 09:19 (A review of Poseidon)

Some cool VFX scenes, Fergie, Johnny Drama, the actor formerly known as Richard Dreyfuss, and a big ass wave.

This is a classic example of a notable filmmaker who is passed his prime and given too big of a budget.

Marwencol

Posted : 9 years, 8 months ago on 26 March 2015 09:37 (A review of Marwencol)

A film about a man who wants to wear high heels? Ok, there is far more to this documentary than that. In fact, it was a pretty damn interesting doc until they focused on the heels.

Knuckleball!

Posted : 9 years, 8 months ago on 26 March 2015 09:32 (A review of Knuckleball!)

The rarity of a knuckleballer is more impressive than this documentary but I am still impressed they made a full-length documentary, on such a subject, interesting.

A Fast Movie for the Slow

Posted : 9 years, 8 months ago on 26 March 2015 08:18 (A review of Turbo)

This originally looked to be a thoughtful, unique animated movie but once I watched, it seemed like an afterthought in the Dreamworks lineup. From its terrible release date to its content. The idea of a snail going incredibly fast is a fun idea but the results are menial and much of its all-star cast is wasted in this under performer about an under performer who becomes an over performer.

The comedy seems to insult the audience and it's lowbrow when it could have easily have not been.

The film wanted to be a mix of "Cars" and "Up" but fell short of both.

A Rio without Rapids

Posted : 9 years, 8 months ago on 26 March 2015 08:06 (A review of Rio)

Decent music with a fine storyline but the two leads of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway were miscast - Northern accents from Brazilian/rainforest birds? However, a New Zealander provides more memorable moments than the music, Jemaine Clement, as the villain.

The Crass Teapot

Posted : 9 years, 8 months ago on 13 March 2015 08:25 (A review of The Brass Teapot)

Rather masochistic but an interesting look into the psyches of people and the demons that come out when given a choice.

It's characters are rash and crass but somehow still worthy of our attention. It heads in a direction you don't want to go, but ends nicely.
